Trip to Loglogo and Ngurunit, August 2011

Photos 1 - 77 out of 77 | Back to Albums

Emailing invoices and other last minute work at Bomen Hotel, Isiolo while waiting for the car to be ready. Got some ugali flour, oil, tea, sugar and baby porridge for Loglogo and Ngurunit. Loading the last few things of foodstuffs and then we're off! The wonders of the Chinese, tarmac road from Isiolo to Merille. But Chinese investment in Africa is a heated topic. Now they want to build a road from the coast to the oil in Sudan. What will Kenya gain? At least we're now travelling on one of the best roads in Kenya.
No more tarmac. Me and Salandi in the LandCruiser travelling north from Isiolo. Salandi and Chris "Lampard".
Picking Fatuma at World Vision office, Laisamis. Family members of Salandi in Loglogo. Salandi with parents in Loglogo.
Me with Salandis parents in Loglogo. Salandis mother (right). Me and Salandi in Loglogo.
Last call to the world. Network up in the tree between Loglogo and Ngurunit. Up in the tree between Loglogo and Ngurunit where the last network for some days was to be found. To the interior! Leaving Loglogo for Ngurunit.
Children at Basele's harambee. Fund-raising (harambee) for Stephen Basele, who is going to study at university. Steven Labarakwe was the guest of honour.
Children at Basele's harambee. I was special guest at the harambee and for some reason I always attract children in Kenya. Children at the harambee.
Basele's harambee. Child at the harambee. Women at the harambee.
Stephen Basele, who had a fund-raising (harambee) for his university studies. Basele's mother giving a vote of thanks. The guest of honour and myself as the special guest.
Sarah with a friend. More children at the harambee. High-jumping outside Camp Lasamu, with Mount Poi in the background.
Hopla jumping high. James jumped the highest. Chat and supper in the evening.
Morning view at Camp Lasamu, Ngurunit. The guest rooms at Camp Lasamu, Ngurunit. Stephen Basele working on a project proposal in Ngurunit.
Lkesesians home at Camp Lasamu in Ngurunit. James and a neighbour.
Ndurra and James preparing lunch.
Salandi and Ndurra in the kitchen. Salandi. Rafaela, Joeli and Sara playing.
Sara Labarakwe. Basele at the old hiding place for hunting giraffes by the river, one of the historical sites that Bridging Ages Northern Kenya has documented.
Salandi and Mount Poi. Basele and Mount Poi. Me and Salandi.
Salandi with sun glasses. Basele.
Salandi. Basele, Samwelm Steven and Stephen discussing the project proposal for solar power and satellite internet. Stephen Lengalayo, one of the members of BANK:
Slaughtering a goat for supper. Another of the historical sites that BANK members have found and documented. Iron was made here and the waste from the process can still be found. The old hiding place for hunting giraffes by the river.
Basele. Basele and Mount Poi. Camp Lasamu and Mount Poi.
Wario cutting the sugar cane. Chipo in the background. James, Fatuma and Wario. Stevens mother.
Fatumas father. Sara and Felista jumping the rope.
Gotta love the name of this place! Breakfast in Laisamis. Salandi in Laisamis.
Northern Kenya is dry! Somewhere between Laisamis and Merille. Stuck between Isiolo and Nanyuki with no petrol. Finally made it to Nanyuki. Now it's raining cats and dogs. Imagine we left a place in the morning where it hasn't rained for like years.
In the matatu from Isiolo to Nanyuki. Someone didn't quite think here... The shower just above the toilet seat. Joskaki hotel, Nanyuki.

Salandi and Patricia with the Samburu morans after the concert.
Adda Oromo from Moyale brought many to the dance floor.
Salandi and Patricia soon joined the Samburu dance and others followed.
Lmetili Generation, Samburu artists from Arapal on Mount Kulal, performing beautifully on the stage in Alliance Francaises Gardens.
Second time I was in Northern Kenya. Travelling on top of lorries transporting animals was an adventure for sure!

Hmm, I wonder if any Nairobi bakery serves the Swedish cream-and-almond-filled bun "semla" today?!? Getting tempted by all pictures and mentions by Swedes eating semla today on Shrove Tuesday, or Fat Tuesday as we call it in Sweden.

January sure is a lot hotter in Nairobi than October - December were. No rains, just blue sky. But also dry and dusty. Doing errands in town today.

Who invented the term "rush hour"? I'm sure (s)he wasn't from Nairobi. Heading to Kenyatta University to meet my parents.

Hmm, in the Kenya Vision 2030 Isiolo is going to be a resort town for tourists. The land where this will be built is causing deadly conflicts between communities in the area, which is said to be the cause of the recent riots after three people were killed. Not sure this is the way to attract tourists to the area...

Reportedly the worst ever violence in Isiolo, with 800 youth on the streets, stones big enough that you'd think a tractor would have taken them there and police overwhelmed and having difficulties to contain the situation. Samuel Labarakwe one of many who can't leave the town, although tourists are escorted by GSU (General Service Unit) out of and through Isiolo.

Riots in Isiolo right now... Reports say boda boda drivers killed and now others took to the streets to show their anger. Praying for peace and to keep innocent people safe.

Waiting for a matatu to go to town... I wonder if anyone has made research into how many hours that are wasted in Nairobi every day due to bad traffic planning and no timetables.
